IGES contributed to international policymaking processes for sustainable development such as the COP16 Cancun Agreements in 2010, the Nagoya Protocol adopted at the 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) and the preparatory process for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, IGES began an institution-wide project aiming at offering recommendations for post-quake recovery.
Kitakyushu Office renamed as the Kitakyushu Urban Centre, enhancing its research for the promotion of local initiatives toward sustainable cities
Joint research with TERI on the application of low-carbon technologies in India, promoting a pilot scheme with the participation of Japanese companies (Kansai Research Centre)
Support for CBD COP10: provided research results to “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)”, and disseminated the TEEB final report in Japan
