Presentation

In the first part, the author provided a background on the newly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nation General Assembly on 25th September 2015, along with a set of 17 ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon referred as a universal, integrated and transformative vision for a better world. The author also addressed the drawbacks of the existing conventional planning and decision making approach for natural resources management, which is often based on dis-integrated “silo” planning by sector-based agencies or ministries, focusing on specific individual service area or sector of concern without considering their inherent linkages, potential conflicts, trade-offs and synergies. He emphasized on the need for an effective and integrated approach, which could address the complex and inherent linkages of our global resource systems, consequently, ensuring natural resources security and optimizing the overall resource use efficiency. As a results, the concept of "Nexus Approach" has been introduced. Challenges and opportunities for utilizing this approach for evidence-based decision making and implementing SDGs have also been presented.

In the second part, the author explained about the overall framework regarding the APN Collaborative Project on "Harnessing of Water-Energy-Food Nexus for Making Path of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Country Actions”, funded by Asia-Pacific Network For Global Change Research (APN), including research objectives, research questions, geographical scope of the project (which covers 4 countries including Bangladesh, India, japan and Vietnam), implementation plan and expected outputs.
