Explanatory articles on the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) 2019 are now available

The Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD), held in Bangkok, Thailand from 27 to 29 March, is a key preparatory meeting for the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development scheduled for this coming July (HLPF 2019). Now available on the featured APFSD website are related articles by IGES researchers, including a workshop report on strengthening environmental-social links in the SDGs, which also makes connections to the broader themes discussed at APFSD, and a briefing note showing that integrative approaches on climate change adaptation and sustainable development are critical to the SDGs.

"Can Japan Enhance Its 2030 Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets? Assessment of Economic and Energy-Related Assumptions in Japan's NDC"


An article published in Energy Policy examines the macroeconomic numbers behind Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions targets, finding that more realistic GDP growth assumptions mean the country has enough potential to reach its nationally determined contributions (NDC) with existing mitigation measures. This result implies that it is rational to enhance mitigation targets under the NDC, so as to promote further mitigation measures aimed towards achieving a decarbonised society around 2050.

Ecology Note - Towards a Clean, Green and beautiful Capital City "Ecology Note - Towards a Clean, Green and beautiful Capital City"

IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET), in collaboration with the Phnom Penh Capital Administration (PPCA), the Department of Education, Youth and Sports (DoEYS), and the city’s two collaborating primary schools, developed Ecology Note, a supplementary material for promoting environmental education (E.E.) in primary schools. Complemented by field exercises on topics such as source segregation, waste audits and composting, the publication is intended to support teachers’ introduction of an E.E.-based active-learning approach, to engage students in deeper learning, based on their own experience, and to also promote the 3Rs in a school context.
