Launch of the featured website on the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4)

The fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) was held from 11 to 15 March in Nairobi, Kenya. IGES researchers were in attendance and provided explanations and insights on notable issues for Japanese and Asian audiences.

Launch of a featured website on the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) 2019

The Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) which was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 27 to 29 March, is a key preparatory meeting for the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development meeting planned for this coming July (HLPF 2019). This special website features explanatory articles, on-site reports and related publications.

Launch of the world’s first Voluntary Local Review (VLR) online platform

The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an international initiative in which the local government voluntarily reviews the status of its efforts on the SDGs and publishes the results as a comparable report. IGES shared VLR reports at HLPF 2018 and received a great deal of positive feedback. Subsequently, on 25 March, the “VLR Lab” was launched as the world’s first Voluntary Local Review online platform offering comprehensive information.

IGES research leads to recommendations for inclusion in the 2019 ECOSOC Thematic Focus Report

While mounting evidence indicates that the world is not on track to achieve the 1.5 degree Paris Agreement target nor many of the SDGs, recent research carried out by IGES provides hope, suggesting there are still ways in which policymakers could strengthen the integration between climate change and sustainable development. Research led to four recommendations which will serve as a contribution by IGES to the 2019 ECOSOC Thematic Focus Report, entitled “Long-term impact of current trends in the economic, social and environmental areas on the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals".

Activity Report of International Workshop "How Can Asia Manage Air Pollution and Climate Change? From Understanding Impacts to Implementing Solutions"

Recent research, including a high profile UN report, has shown that the multiple benefits of managing air pollution and climate change could improve health and well-being in Asia. However there is still a gap between research that focuses on understanding air pollution and climate change impacts, and experiences with implementing solutions to these problems. This workshop brought together internationally recognised experts from Japan, China, Korea, and Europe. They discussed how Asia can close the gap between understanding impacts and implementing solutions, based on presentations of recent research findings in addition to cases of policy implementation in Japan, China and Korea.
