On 10 November, 2017, Prof. Kazuhiko Takeuchi, IGES President, met with Prof.Johan Rockström, Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre. This video shows their conversation on the concept of planetary boundaries as advocated by Prof. Rockström. They also talked about sustainability science, and actions to deliver the goals set out by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.(About 11 minutes / English audio only)

NHK Special
Radical Changes in World Business "Shock of Net Zero Revolution" (on air, 17 December)


This NHK Special, to be aired on Sunday, 17 December, follows a delegation from the Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (Japan-CLP) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2017 (COP23) held in Bonn, Germany in November 2017. Japan-CLP is a coalition of Japanese companies tackling climate change issues, with IGES serving as its secretariat. This programme was produced in close cooperation with Japan - CLP. Representatives from Japan-CLP met with Ms.Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and also held discussions with major institutional investors, and leaders of RE100, among others. The programme also looks into where Japanese companies stand in relation to the international trend on decarbonisation, what domestic hurdles they face and what kind of potential they have moving forward.

COP23 Reporting Seminar (held on 1 December)

On 1 December, "IGES COP23 Reporting Seminar: Long-Term Vision for Decarbonisation: International progress at COP23 - Moving forward with Non-State Actors" was successfully held at Kokuyo Hall in Shinagawa, Tokyo with an audience of about 300. The seminar reported on the discussions at COP23 held in Bonn, Germany from 6 to 17 November, and invited non-state actors including companies and local governments for a panel discussion on their impressions of COP23. Machiten (held from 8 to 9 December)

"Machiten 2017" was held at Hikarie Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo on 8 and 9 December. Under the theme of "Shining a light on Japanese cities", Machiten is a platform to collect new collaborative actions and ideas for sustainable local development and to find ways to solve regional issues using SDGs. Machiten was being held for the third time this year, and its Executive Committee was chaired by Mr.Hidemitsu Sasaya, Managing Executive Officer at ITO EN, Ltd. which continues to make advanced efforts in promoting SDGs. IGES participated in this event for the first time, with senior researcher Dr. Junichi Fujino serving as adviser, and IGES also hosting an exhibition booth and poster exhibition to raise awareness about its work advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the Asia-Pacific region. This event was a good chance to exchange information and learn what actions local governments and companies are taking.
