Establishment of the Article 6 Implementation Partnership Center

IGES will serve as the secretariat of the "Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership Center" to be established by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan and welcomed at the G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo earlier this month. Having the general framework of Article 6 rules agreed upon, countries are now moving forward with implementing carbon market mechanisms that allow for international cooperation on emissions reductions. To expand the implementation of Article 6, it is necessary to build high-integrity carbon markets with increased private investment through international collaboration. In response, the "Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership" was launched by Japan at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). IGES will serve as the secretariat of the "Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership Center" to support the development of institutional and governance frameworks and capacity-building of government officials and related organisations under the Article 6 market mechanisms.

The 4th Kitakyushu SDGs Training Programme: Learn from the Front-runner Practices of Creating Synergy Effects from Renewable Energy by Visiting Two Zero-Carbon Cities in Kyushu, Japan

The 4th Kitakyushu SDG Training was held by the IGES Kitakyushu Urban Centre from 6 to 10 March for undergraduate and graduate students with diverse nationalities who were selected as participants via open application. This five-day programme visited the two frontrunner zero-carbon cities in the Kyushu region, namely, Kitakyushu City in Fukuoka Prefecture, and Goto City in Nagasaki Prefecture, where the first commercial-base offshore wind farms in Kyushu are being constructed. The participants learned how to practically integrate the three basic principles of the SDGs: environment, economy and society, from a diverse range of stakeholders, including local governments, companies, organisations and fishery associations, who are creating socio-economic synergetic effects from renewable energy projects.
