ITTO project - Analysis of timber legality assurance systems and good practices in China and Viet Nam for sustainable timber trade
In recent years, the domestic and international socio-political and business environments surrounding the timber industry and trade have changed significantly and rapidly. Both legality and sustainability is required throughout timber supply chains to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. IGES conducted a project 'Analysis of Timber Legality Assurance Systems and Good Practices in China and Viet Nam for Sustainable Timber Trade ', which was organised by the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) and funded by the Forestry Agency. For this ITTO project, IGES conducted a survey to support importers’ due diligence to ensure the legal provenance of their timber and their commitment to contributing to sustainable forest management. Based on the results of these surveys, IGES held a webinar exploring the revised Forest Law, focusing on how it addressed illegally sourced timber, as well as discussing the results of a questionnaire survey targeting Chinese timber-related businesses on measures to ensure the legality of their timber products. The webinar also shared measures taken by Vietnamese operators that might help with the due diligence of timber products made from planted tree species.

Innovations in citizen engagement towards advancing the decarbonisation of cities and lifestyles
Achieving demand-side climate mitigation not only requires individual consumer awareness and actions, but also comprehensive changes that involve four vital drivers: business and corporate, political and institutional, technological and infrastructure and sociocultural, including social norms and collaborations. Thus, cooperation between governments, businesses and citizens is indispensable for mobilising the full extent of their knowledge and capabilities. At this event held on 24 February, speakers discussed the opportunities and challenges of citizen collaboration towards decarbonisation, and featured inspiring examples from the cities of Yokohama, Kagoshima and Odate in Japan, along with cases from the United Kingdom, India and Germany.
