Vision 2050: Time to Transform - What actions are needed to bring about transformation?-

In October 2021, IGES published a Japanese translation of "Vision 2050 : Time to Transform" in cooperation with several Japanese companies and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Over one year later, the global situation has come to a major turning point, and companies are under pressure to adapt their actions to these changes. This is a special page featuring an discussion between Kazuhiko Takeuchi, IGES President, and Peter Bakker, CEO, WBCSD, on "The Pathways to Transformation" based on "Vision 2050: Time to Transform" which presents a new framework for business activities over the next 10 years.

IGES Researcher Selected as a member of the Policy and Finance Committee of World Adaptation Science Programme

Dr. Sivapuram Ventaka Rama Krishna PRABHAKAR, Principal Policy Researcher, Adaptation and Water area, IGES, has been selected as a member of the Policy and Finance Committee (PFC) of the World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP). WASP's vision is primarily to fill the gaps in adaptation knowledge and provide decision-makers with science-based policies, solutions and actions for successful adaptation to climate change in vulnerable developing countries. The PFC is an international panel composed of members from the policy and finance sectors, including the banking sector, investors, science-policy interface leaders and policymakers. The mandate and duties of this Committee include liaising with relevant policy and finance communities and organisations, and supporting network building.

"8th NIES International Forum - How has the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model committed to decarbonization? - "

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) has been developing and applying the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM), an integrated assessment model, to various countries in cooperation with research institutes in Japan and abroad, especially in Asia. In this 8th NIES International Forum which will be co-hosted by IGES on 16 February, research by using AIM initiatives in Asia will be introduced, and opinions from policymakers and other stakeholders will be shared. Discussion will also look at how the findings from scenario analyses can be implemented in the real society to realise a decarbonised society, and explore the challenges and expectations for future scenario analyses and the AIM. By sharing these future issues and expectations for the AIM, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how the AIM can be part of common platform for a decarbonised society.

"EU-Japan 100 Cities Event on Climate Action"

IGES and the Delegation of the European Union to Japan co-organised the "EU-Japan 100 Cities Event on Climate Action" on 25 and 26 January, with the aim of contributing to the discussion on enhancing cooperation between the EU and Japan at the city level to meet the shared goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The event featured an exchange of views on the experiences of cities in improving energy security and resilience by promoting local production and consumption of energy and in addressing energy poverty. Following this, there was a presentation introducing "Gender Aspects in Climate Change Action and Urban Planning". On the panel, representatives of European and Japanese cities and financial institutions exchanged ideas and experiences for strengthening the role of local authorities and financial institutions in mobilising finance for local decarbonisation initiatives. "IGES's Capacity Building Training on Urban Green Infrastructures Prototype Module Version #01"

A training session was held on 7 and 8 December by IGES on capacity building for green urban infrastructure, aiming to share knowledge on the importance of inventories for emissions of GHGs and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) from urban infrastructure and their contribution to the NDCs. The training was jointly organised with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur, which was tailored for the Ministry of Public Works and Human Settlement in Indonesia. The participants could gain the ability to conduct analysis or assessment of the impacts of the development of green urban infrastructure on the transport, water and wastewater, and municipal solid waste management sectors.
