Climate Bonds Initiative and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies join forces to mobilise Japanese capital market for climate action

The Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) and IGES have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support Japan in meeting the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement, by strengthening the country's green and climate-related thematic bond market. The focus areas include strengthening capacity for Japanese national, sub-national and private sector actors in green and transition growth planning, financing and institutional frameworks; improving cooperation and evidence-based knowledge sharing on green and transition finance; and advancing thought leadership on opportunities for Japan's themed bond market growth, drawing upon evidence from both the public and private sectors.

UPCOMING EVENT
"EU-Japan 100 Cities Event on Climate Action"

On 27 May 2021, the European Union (EU) and Japan announced a Green Alliance to accelerate their respective transition towards a climate-neutral, circular and resource-efficient economy over the coming decades. The alliance is the first of its kind for the EU and represents an important milestone for the implementation of the European Green Deal and Japan's Green Growth Strategy. "The EU-Japan 100 Cities Event on Climate Action" will contribute to the discussion on how the EU and Japan can enhance cooperation at city level in order to meet the shared goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. This event, organised by Delegation of the European Union to Japan and IGES, will be held on 25 and 26 January aiming to facilitate exchange between EU and Japanese cities through sharing good practices and solutions taken by leading cities.

"LCS-RNet 13th Annual Meeting : New Scientific Challenges for Strengthening Actions Based on IPCC AR6"

The Strategic Research Network for Leveraging Climate Neutral Sustainable Societies (LCS-RNet) is a network of researchers and research institutions closely involved in national climate policies. IGES has been serving as Secretariat for LCS-RNet since its establishment in 2008. LCS-RNet organised its 13th annual meeting under the theme of "New Scientific Challenges for Strengthening Actions Based on IPCC AR6", on 15-16 December 2022, inviting several prominent experts and researchers involved in IPCC AR6 WGIII. This annual meeting discussed how to trigger transitions, how to bridge science with actions, and how to accelerate systemic transition and innovation. The meeting also featured four thematic themes - decarbonisation in agriculture and forestry, energy and food security, challenges in heavy industries, and a comparative study on zero-carbon cities in France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK. Videos and presentation materials are now available.

EANET / IIASA International Workshop Strengthening the Science-Policy Interface for Clean Air and a Sustainable Future in Asia

In many parts of Asia, air pollution is a great threat to human health and a sustainable future. A growing body of modelling research has employed emissions inventories, scenario development, and benefit estimation techniques to identify technological and behavioural changes that can limit that threat. The multiple benefits resulting from these interventions offer cost-effective solutions to air quality, public health and other sustainable development concerns. However, results do not always translate easily into policy and there can often be a disconnect between science-based models and the policies they seek to influence. This international workshop, held on 19 December, discussed how to design science-policy dialogue reflecting the implications from modelling analysis to policy development and to co-design models by incorporating social and institutional dimensions of feasibility. Some of the presentation materials are available in the link below.

"Can Hydrogen Help the World Accelerate to Net-zero Targets?"

Hydrogen as a fuel source has been gaining popularity as countries accelerate towards climate mitigation targets and net-zero goals. Globally, several countries are already developing plans for commercial hydrogen production and the inclusion of the same in their respective energy mix. However, the policies must present a clear roadmap for developing green hydrogen and implementation plans to facilitate greater collaboration among countries. This workshop, held on 6 December, discussed the progress of developing hydrogen technology, manufacturing, storage, its efficient usage in the global energy mix and geopolitics. Recorded video is available in the link below.

Environmental and Sustainability Implications of the Ukraine War for East and South Asia: Sustainability and Decarbonisation Should Be Accelerated Not Paused Issue Brief

"Environmental and Sustainability Implications of the Ukraine War for East and South Asia: Sustainability and Decarbonisation Should Be Accelerated Not Paused"

Authors: Mark ELDER; David D. SUSSMAN; Sivapuram Ventaka Rama Krishna PRABHAKAR; Eric ZUSMAN; Kentaro TAMURA

The economic disruptions from the Ukraine war have intensified short term concerns about energy and food security, as well as access to critical minerals. Climate security is also increasingly urgent. This paper urges governments to speed up, not slow down, transitions away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable development patterns. For both energy and climate security, energy, conservation and efficiency will produce the quickest short-term results. Investments in new fossil fuel production take a long time to complete so they cannot solve short-term disruptions. New energy investment should be shifted from fossil fuels to renewable energy, which is now more price competitive in many situations. The war is not a reason to "hit pause" on decarbonisation or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
