IGES Makes Major Contributions to the Action Plan on Integrated Solid Waste Management in Padang City, Indonesia 

On 1 November, Padang City, Indonesia, launched its Action Plan and baseline report on integrated municipal solid waste management. As one of the main partners in this endeavour, IGES made a major contribution to the development and drafting of this Action Plan from technical and financial perspectives, including through research, training and capacity building, organisation of seminars and workshops, documentation of knowledge, and drafting of the Action Plan and baseline report.

New Episodes of About Sustainability… the IGES Podcast

About Sustainability… is the IGES podcast featuring in-depth discussions by IGES staff and guests on various sustainability-related topics. Just in time for the second part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15), the latest episode of the podcast allows listeners to get acquainted with the much-awaited post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF). Last month, the podcast also launched the "Sustainability Afoot" series, in which listeners can enjoy learning about key IGES topics on an outdoor walk with the experts working on them. The first episode of the series is on the circular economy with Yasuhiko Hotta, Programme Director, Sustainable Consumption and Production Area. IGES-supported City-to-City Collaboration between Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur to Decarbonise Buildings Wins C40 Award

To achieve the 1.5°C goal, efforts must be accelerated at various city levels, including states, cities and districts in each country. Since 2019, IGES and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) have been supporting the development of low-carbon building standards for facilities owned by Kuala Lumpur City, Malaysia. This project, under the Ministry of the Environment's "City-to-City Collaboration for Zero Carbon Society" was recognised by the C40 (Climate Leadership Group for Major Cities) as an outstanding urban initiative.

New Reports Added to the VLR Lab (August - November)

IGES manages the VLR Lab, an online platform offering comprehensive information about local government actions on the SDGs. The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an international initiative in which local governments conduct their own evaluation of actions on the SDGs and publish the results as a report comparable with other local governments. From August through November, the VLR Lab received reports from Toyota (Japan), Kiel (Germany), Karatay (Turkey), Bonn (Germany), Melbourne (Australia), Amman (Jordan), Avcilar (Turkey), Florence (Italy), Manizales (Colombia), Düsseldorf (Germany) and Sultanbeyli (Turkey).

Registration now open for the Leveraging a Climate-neutral Society - Strategic Research Network (LCS-RNet) 13th Annual Meeting

The Strategic Research Network for Leveraging Climate Neutral Sustainable Societies (LCS-RNet) is a network of researchers and research institutions closely involved in national climate policies. IGES has been serving as Secretariat for LCS-RNet since its establishment in 2008. LCS-RNet will organise its 13th annual meeting, under the theme of "New Scientific Challenges for Strengthening Actions Based on IPCC AR6", on 15-16 December 2022, inviting several prominent experts and researchers involved in IPCC AR6 WGIII. This annual meeting will discuss how to trigger transitions, how to bridge science with actions, and how to accelerate systemic transition and innovation. The meeting also features four thematic themes - decarbonisation in agriculture and forestry, energy and food security, challenges in heavy industries, and a comparative study on zero-carbon cities in France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK.
