Launch of the Special Webpage "Net-zero: Towards the 1.5°C Goal"

In 2021, Japan announced its Green Growth Strategy, setting out a roadmap for key technologies in line with its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. Recently there has been global focus on net-zero,
meaning that there is also greater scope and potential for related technological cooperation among countries. Japan is technologically advanced in critical sectors, and so can take the lead in
initiating regional as well as bilateral cooperation as the world seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. IGES’ research explores the dynamics of net-zero strategies among countries in Asia
and beyond, and seeks to understand what kind of policy changes are required to help accelerate the world toward the net-zero goals, and then work out how and when these policies can best
be put into practice. IGES has vital expertise in core areas such as devising realistic energy transition scenarios in emerging economies, evolving transformative strategies, and developing
innovative models for technology cooperation. In this way, IGES will carry out research that can provide actionable insights for achieving carbon neutrality. This special webpage showcases
the wide scope of research and activities related to net-zero.

Launch of the Special Webpage "IGES Activity on High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2022)"

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the United Nations’ annual global platform for following up and reviewing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17
Sustainable Development Goals. This year, HLPF will take place from 5 to 15 July under the theme of "Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full
implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". A total of 44 countries will carry out voluntary national reviews (VNRs) for their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development, and in-depth reviews will be conducted on SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

New Episodes of About Sustainability…

About Sustainability… is the IGES podcast featuring in-depth discussions by IGES staff and guests on various sustainability-related topics. Each episode addresses a different topic -- an
upcoming event, a significant issue for debate, or some interesting research findings.
In June, the podcast released three new episodes. The first is a conversation with Wardarina, co-chair of the Asia Pacific Regional CSO Engagement Mechanism (APRCEM), which is a self-organised platform
that helps diverse groups of non-state actors in the Asia-Pacific participate in and voice their perspectives on the Agenda 2030. The second and third episodes were a two-part, in-depth,
free-flowing conversation centred on the SDGs and why it seems so challenging for the world to achieve the goals.

UPCOMING EVENT |
HLPF 2022 Side Event "Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Knowledge and Experiences on
Environmental Dimension VNRs"

Annual reports by the United Nations show that the Asia-Pacific region is falling behind on the SDGs. There are many known reasons for slow or stalled progress. Some of the well-understood causes
include a consistent lack of data and indicators, especially for the environment, which are a crucial compass for stocktaking, progress and review, and planning. This side event of HLPF
will take place on 7 July and will share key findings of a collaborative project between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and IGES, with funding from the Norwegian
Government, aimed at reviewing 50 Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) produced by 36 Asia-Pacific countries, which were submitted to the HLPF on the SDGs between 2016 and 2021.

PAST EVENT |
Youth Inclusive Action on Integrating SDGs, Climate Change & Biodiversity

Ahead of the "Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the SDGs" in July, IGES organised an event to encourage active participation in the conference and
deepen discussions by stakeholders in the Asian region. "Youth Inclusive Action on Integrating SDGs, Climate Change & Biodiversity" was held on 24 June, with participation from UNFCCC,
UNDESA, UNESCAP, MOEJ and various stakeholders, who came together to accelerate discussion and share experiences. Featuring video messages and presentations highlighting the significance
of holding the third global conference in Japan, the event was a good opportunity to introduce notable actions taken by Japan, based on the Circulating and Ecological Sphere (CES) concept,
which develops the SDGs at the regional and local levels and integrates social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
