The Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies Between the Paris Agreement and the SDGs
IGES will collaborate in the Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the SDGs, to be held on 20 and 21 July, and co-convened by UN DESA and UNFCCC Secretariat. In order to achieve both the 2030 Agenda and the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement by 2030, it is critical to strengthen co-benefits and accelerate synergies between them. Both adopted in 2015, the Paris Agreement and the SDGs do not exist independently of each other; rather, they are complementary and should be implemented in an integrated manner. The conference aims to build a foundation for synergistic actions that align with the climate and SDG processes, and stimulate action by various stakeholders at the global, regional and national levels.

Stockholm+50 Associated Event "Implementing Integrated Solutions to Planetary Challenges: Reflections and Perspectives on Integration in the Post-Stockholm+50 Era"
IGES hosted an online Associated Event to Stockholm+50 to look both backward and forward in considering how policymakers can implement integrated solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss and other planetary challenges and achieve a truly sustainable society. Particular attention was placed on the promise and limitations of emerging integrated approaches such as "One Health" and "Circulating and Ecological Spheres (CES)". This event unpacked those approaches to see how they are relevant to the topics of Stockholm+50 and featured a discussion among IGES experts and guest panellist Professor Kirsten Halsnaes (Technical University of Denmark) to explore what implementation challenges are foreseen in the next 50 years.

"Commentary on the IPCC 6th Assessment Report Working Group 3 Report Part 3"
The 56th session of IPCC General Assembly and Working Group III (WGIII), held from 21 March to 4 April, approved the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) WGIII Report, as well as the main body of the report. As emphasised at COP26 last year, even if countries achieve their current nationally determined contributions (NDCs), the world will not be able to reach even the 2°C target, let alone the 1.5°C target. In response, the WGIII report indicated in strong terms that immediate and dramatic systemic change, including social transformation, is essential. Furthermore, the report shows that the means exist to achieve this goal, and that it is possible to achieve it without impeding economic development. Following April's webinar about the SPM, on 12 May IGES Research Leader Eric Zusman, one of the lead authors of the WGIII report, discussed Chapter 17, "Transition in the context of sustainable development".
