Launch of the Webpage "Special Feature on G7 & G20 in 2022"

This year, the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in June and Group of Twenty (G20) Summit in October will be convened in Elmau, Germany and Bali, Indonesia, respectively. With the strengthening of interdependence between countries around the world and the shifting balance of power, the role and responsibilities of the G7- a small club of advanced economies - are being called into question. Meanwhile, as local challenges are increasingly globalised, the G20,a diverse group of countries, often with conflicting interests, has an increasingly significant role to play. This year, the war in Ukraine, poses an additional challenge to the ongoing negotiations and discussions.

On this special webpage, IGES researchers will highlight and identify priority issues related to the environment and climate, as discussed at the G7/G20.

Launch of the Special Webpage "IGES Activity on Global Stocktake"

The final approval of the implementation guidelines for the Paris Agreement at the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change last November has led to a phase in which countries will be required to take further ambitious action to achieve the Agreement’s goals in accordance with agreed-upon rules. The first Global Stocktake (GST), a mechanism for assessing collective progress toward the goals, will therefore be a focal item on the global climate change agenda. The first GST already began at COP26 and is due to conclude in November 2023, at COP28. This special webpage provides an overview of the GST and its procedures. Find out more about the GST and catch up on the latest developments by accessing the site below.

Introducing About Sustainability…, a Podcast by IGES

About Sustainability…, launched in February 2022, is a new fortnightly podcast presented by IGES, featuring in-depth discussions by IGES staff and guests on various sustainability-related topics. Each episode addresses a different topic -- an upcoming event, a significant issue for debate, or some interesting research findings. Video versions, with speakers’ headshots and audio waveforms, are also available on the IGES YouTube channel. Past discussions have focused on important environment-related processes such as the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the annual review of progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The newest episode is a conversation with two authors from IGES about the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report Working Group III Report. Tune into the podcast to get a deeper understanding of major sustainability-related topics, and subscribe on your listening platform of choice to never miss an episode.

Everything shared on the podcast is off-the-cuff discussion, and any viewpoints expressed are those held by the speakers at the time of recording.

UPCOMING EVENT
"Commentary on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report Working Group III Report: Part 3"

The 56th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) General Assembly and Working Group III (WGIII), held from 21 March to 4 April, approved the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) WGIII Report and the main body of the report. As emphasised at COP26 last year, even if countries achieve their current nationally determined reduction targets (NDCs), the world will not be able to reach even the 2°C target, let alone the 1.5°C target. In response, the WGIII report indicated in strong terms that immediate and dramatic systemic change, including social transformation, is essential. Furthermore, the report shows that the means exist to achieve this goal, and that it is possible to achieve it without impeding economic development. Following the webinar about the SPM held in April, on 12 May, IGES Research Leader Eric Zusman, who is one of the lead authors of WGIII report, will discuss Chapter 17, "Transition in the context of sustainable development".

The launching event of "Plastic Atlas Asia - Facts and figures about the world of synthetic polymers [Japan Special Edition]"

"Plastic Atlas Asia - Facts and figures about the world of synthetic polymers [Japan Special Edition]" will be launched on 30 May. This new publication is the Japanese translation of Plastic Atlas Asia, which highlights challenges and solutions in a region with intense plastic production, use and pollution and explores the effects of COVID-19 on the issue of plastic waste. The Japan Special Edition also includes three new chapters on the current status of plastic waste management specifically in Japan. Through presentations from experts and stakeholders and discussions between panellists and participants, this launching event will focus on the challenge of plastic pollution and its solutions in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on Japan.

PAST EVENTS
"Webinar No. 1: Practices of Open Waste Burning in Asian Cities - Challenges and Opportunities"

Considering the importance of addressing the issue of open waste burning and its impacts on climate and health, the IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) is organising a series of webinars on the topic during 2022-2023, along with other national and international partners. The first webinar gave an overview of open waste burning practices in Asia, and shared challenges and opportunities faced by cities in addressing these practices, based on experiences in selected pilot locations. Researchers, practitioners and policymakers working on waste management were invited to present and discuss open waste burning practices in their own cities. This was followed by an engaging and constructive discussion between the panellists and participants.

"Commentary on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report Working Group III Report: Part 2"

In April, IGES held webinars to provide an overview of the IPCC AR6 WGIII Report. Part 2 of the commentary features IGES Research Manager, Sudarmanto Budi Nugroho, who is one of the lead authors of the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) and contributed to Chapter 10 of the main report as well as a cross-chapter box on sustainable development pathways. In this webinar, he discussed the SPM in depth, highlighting its key messages, and gave a summary of Chapter 10 (transport), including the roles of national governments, local governments, businesses and other stakeholders. Check out the video, and be sure to tune into Part 3 on 12 May.

"A One Health Approach to Regulating Ocean Microplastics: Translating Advocacy into Action"

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis has focused a growing amount of attention on the close interrelationship between human, animal and environmental health. Efforts to capture this interrelationship in policy and practice are often summarised under the concept of "One Health." An area where the One Health approach could be particularly useful is strengthening regulations to deal with microplastics in the world’s oceans. Aside from being an emerging pollutant in the marine environment, microplastics may have severe health impacts on humans, animals and the natural environment, all of which are interrelated. This side event, jointly organised by the governments of Japan and France, featured a multidisciplinary panel discussion to bridge the gap between advocacy and action. Experts from academia, business and international organisations discussed the challenges on the impacts of microplastics on marine ecosystems and humans, and measures to overcome them.
