IGES, START and their Regional Partners to Establish a Consortium for Advancing the Circulating and Ecological Sphere (CES) Concept in South and Southeast Asia

On 14 October, IGES, START International, Inc. together with several leading academic and research institutes in South and Southeast Asia signed an agreement to establish a consortium for advancing the Circulating and Ecological Sphere (CES) concept, with the aim of building resilience in city regions across the region. The consortium will jointly work to advance research and capacity building that strengthens understanding and promotes utilisation of the CES concept, in order to achieve sustainability. The CES approach applies spatial integration of urban/peri-urban/rural interdependencies to address the interaction of complex social, environmental and economic sustainability challenges. One key aspect of fostering the CES concept is the creation of a framework of continuous iterative cycles between scientific evidence-based knowledge generation, regional knowledge sharing, capacity building of key actors and co-design of solutions.

“Actionable Recommendations and Ambitious Directions for Restoring Planetary Health in the COVID-19 Era: IGES Position Paper 3.0”

The wide-ranging social, environmental, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to calls for policymakers to restore planetary health. This third COVID-19 position paper from IGES aims to help policymakers translate support for a healthy planet into actionable recommendations and ambitious policy directions. After a review of the core concepts of planetary health and “One Health”, the paper offers recommendations related to green and blue issues--ecosystems and water systems. It then offers suggestions on how to maintain modest momentum in allocating stimulus funds to interventions that address brown and grey issues--protecting the climate and curbing air pollution. The paper concludes by reflecting on how to integrate protection of ecosystems and the climate while also ensuring that developing countries and disadvantaged stakeholders are not left behind in the process.
