View on your browser. 日本語 1 July 2021 NEWS IGES’ Integrative Strategic Research Programme for the 8th Phase Begins From 1 July, IGES begins implementation of its four-year Integrative Strategic Research Programme for the 8th Phase (ISRP8). In a message describing the organisation's plans, IGES President TAKEUCHI Kazuhiko highlights the integrated approaches that will be taken over the next four years to move towards decarbonised, resource circulating societies in harmony with nature. More details available here HLPF 2021 Special Page Launch The United Nations annual High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will be held this year in New York City from 6 to 15 July, and IGES has launched a special page to coincide with this major event. The site includes related publications, key messages about the HLPF and information about on-line side events. More details available here Updated G7/G20 Special Page At the G7 summit held in the UK from 11 to 13 June, G7 leaders discussed actions on climate change and the environment in preparation for important international conferences, such as COP26, to be held later this year. IGES completed the Japanese version of the “G7 Leadership for Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Economic Recovery and Growth: Summary Report,” an independent report commissioned for the G7 by the UK Prime Minister and prepared by a team led by Nicholas Stern of the LSE. More details available here May and June Updates: Platform for Redesign 2020 In May and June, the Platform for Redesign welcomed updates from Armenia, Singapore, Norway and Latvia. Moreover, following the Leaders Summit on Climate in April, Armenia and Norway also shared policies related to their ambitions for 2030. To learn more about each country’s contributions to the Platform, please visit the respective country pages on the website. May Update (Armenia and Singapore): here 2030 Ambition Highlights (Armenia and Norway): here June Update (Latvia): here PAST EVENTS High-Level Dialogue on Energy Side Event: “Integrated Approaches to Boost SDG7 and Climate-relevant SDG Actions Towards Sustainability in the Asia-Pacific” On 21 June, IGES and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) co-hosted a virtual side event for the Ministerial-level thematic forums that serve as preparation before the High-level Dialogue on Energy at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. The preparatory sessions brought together co-leading organisations as well as the technical expertise of working group members. In the side event, speakers shared perspectives and lessons learned from the Asia-Pacific, namely, 1) the key messages of the “Global Roadmap” to achieve SDG7 by 2030 and zero carbon by 2050 based on discussions in the five thematic working groups; 2) how to contribute to the “Energy Compact”, and voluntary commitments to achieve SDG7 by 2030; and 3) how integrated approaches can boost SDG7 and climate-relevant SDG actions, especially in the region. More details available here Webinar: “Integrating Clean Air and Climate Actions in Cities: Lessons Learned on Co-Benefits in Asia” On 16 June, IGES co-sponsored a webinar titled “Integrating Clean Air and Climate Actions in Cities: Lessons Learned on Co-Benefits in Asia”, and also released guidelines on co-benefits. Integrating air pollution and climate change in a single set of policies or actions could save cities time and money on two of their most pressing problems. Many cities have become more aware of the potential of integrated solutions to deliver clean air, a stable climate, and improved health while saving time and money. But awareness of these co-benefits has not always translated into actions leading to their achievement. Part of the reason for this shortfall is that fulfilling this promise requires cities to 1) possess knowledge of core co-benefits concepts; 2) employ decision-making tools to identify technological and behavioural solutions based on that knowledge; and 3) support the implementation and spread of those solutions with policy and governance reforms. Participants in the webinar learned about approaches, experiences and needs of cities in Asia on adopting the co-benefits approach.
