Contribution to the Online Platform for Sustainable and Resilient Recovery from COVID-19

IGES is pleased to announce its contributions to the ministerial meeting and Online Platform for sustainable and resilient recovery from COVID-19 (“Platform for Redesign 2020”), an initiative led by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan and supported by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat. At a time when the world faces the impacts of both the COVID-19 pandemic and pre-existing environmental crises, the “Platform for Redesign 2020” aims to encourage the redesign of our economies and societies to become more sustainable, resilient and inclusive. Shinjiro Koizumi, the Minister of the Environment, Japan, introduced the idea at the 11th Petersberg Climate Dialogue in April and the June Momentum organised by the UNFCCC Secretariat in June, and was supported by many stakeholders. The “Platform for Redesign 2020” website is designed to showcase countries’ policies or measures that contribute to addressing the COVID-19 crisis and climate and other environmental crises. The Platform also features video statements, not only from high-level national government officials, but also other critical actors such as international organisations, local governments, businesses and citizens. The website will be periodically updated to maintain and enhance the global momentum toward COP26 in 2021.

IGES now hosting “Sustainability Science”, a leading environmental journal

First published in 2006, Sustainability Science (Springer Nature) probes interactions between global, social and human systems, the complex mechanisms that lead to degradation of these systems, and concomitant risks to human well-being. The editorial office of the journal has been moved to IGES, with Osamu Saito as the Managing Editor, and Kazuhiko Takeuchi, IGES President, as Editor-in-Chief. The journal promotes science-based predictions and impact assessments of global change, and seeks ways to ensure that these can be understood and accepted by society.

MoU with Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)

On 26 August, IGES and PEMSEA (The Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia) signed an MOU at a virtual ceremony. Its objective is to establish IGES as PEMSEA’s Regional Center of Excellence (RCoE) focusing on building capacities, sharing knowledge and providing scientific inputs to policies, programmes and projects aimed at enhancing Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in the Seas of East Asia. EVENTS
IGES organised the City to City Inception Meeting as part of the “Closing the Loop” Project

On 23 July, IGES, in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and with financial support from the Government of Japan, held a virtual City to City Inception Meeting with local governments from four selected Asian cities: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Surabaya, Indonesia; Da Nang, Viet Nam; and Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. As part of the ESCAP project “Closing the Loop: Scaling up Innovation to Tackle Marine Plastic Pollution in ASEAN Cities,” the meeting introduced the city teams to each other, informed them about the project, and promoted learning about each city’s plastic waste management policy goals, challenges and early successes. The aim of the Closing the Loop Project is to strengthen the capacity of cities to improve plastic waste management and reduce plastic pollution flows into the ocean by making municipal plastic waste management processes more circular. The project aligns with the local implementation of the ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris, the Roadmap for Plastic and Waste Management 2018-2030 from the Royal Government of Thailand, and supports the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals 11, 12 and 14.
