The IGES Special Webpage for HLPF 2020 is Live
IGES has launched a special webpage that features information on relevant events and publications related to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2020 (HLPF 2020). The HLPF is the United Nations’ annual global platform for following up and reviewing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and this year’s theme is “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. The international community will discuss how to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic so that measures toward achieving the SDGs can be put back on track and further accelerated.

Update from the Satoyama Development Mechanism (SDM)
The Satoyama Development Mechanism (SDM) is one of the collaborative activities of the International Partnership for Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), established jointly by IGES, the United Nations University (UNU) and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ). The SDM Secretariat opened a call for proposals for the SDM 2020 projects, and IPSI members can submit project proposals by 14 August 2020.

IGES-related events at HLPF 2020
At HLPF 2020, to be held virtually from 7-16 July, IGES will attend official meetings and also organise a side event. This year’s theme is “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”, and will focus on SDGs progress in light of the global pandemic. During the official meeting session on 8 July entitled, “Protecting the Planet and Building Resilience”, IGES President Kazuhiko Takeuchi will speak about the importance of efforts in recovery from the novel coronavirus, as well as building resilience and managing disaster risk while protecting the livelihoods of people and the planet. He will also discuss opportunities and the need for innovation.

Activity Report “Harnessing Climate & SDGs Synergies to Recover Better and Stronger from the Covid-19 Pandemic”
Starting on 28 May, UNDESA and UNFCCC held the “Global Consultations on Climate & SDG Synergies for a Better and Stronger Recovery”. During the first webinar on 28 May, Junichi Fujino, Programme Director at IGES, participated in discussions on how to plan for synergies. On 25 June, IGES President Kazuhiko Takeuchi presented at the third webinar, which focused on next steps for climate and SDG synergies for COVID recovery. Speakers discussed ways to advance synergies for climate and SDGs by making use of upcoming forums on biodiversity, transport, food and oceans.

Activity Report “International Symposium "Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction”
On 30 June, an international symposium on “Climate Action and Disaster Risk Reduction” was organised by the Ministry of the Environment Japan, the Cabinet Office (Government of Japan), and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (with IGES serving as Secretariat), to consider how synergies between three major global agendas (the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the SDGs) can be strengthened in the context of intensifying climate-related disasters and current domestic and international climate change adaptation efforts.
